Staying Hydrated During The Hot Weather

Staying Hydrated During The Hot Weather

Jessie S |

Summer is still here and the heat is high. It’s a great time to get out and enjoy everything, but not without risk. Hydration becomes one of the most important things to focus on, though there are many who do not end up seeing it that way.  If you are looking at making the most out of your time in the hot weather, but want to stay safe, hydration is going to be a key focus. Here’s everything you’re going to want to know.

Why is it important to stay hydrated?

Hydration is key to life, generally. We can only survive 3 days without water, and that’s assuming that we’re tied up to a pole or something and are unable to locate water (MedicalNewsToday, 2019).  Our bodies require it to stay alive, and most of us are actually dehydrated all the time and don’t even realize it.  Proper hydration plays a role in all sorts of physiological functions including:

  • Your heart’s rhythm
  • Your digestive tract (and regularity in the bathroom)
  • Your cognitive function (including your balance)
  • Coordination of your joints, muscles, and limbs in general
  • Etc

Being dehydrated means that you are putting your entire body in jeopardy and it means that you’ll have to be exceptionally careful when you are looking specifically at the idea of doing anything that requires you to be at your “top self”.

The thing about dehydration, too, is that you often don’t realize that you are.  One of the most intriguing things that most people notice when they start making an effort to remain hydrated (such as when they’re pregnant or recovering from an injury), is that they feel “so much better”.  That’s less to do with their choices, and more to do with their hydration!

Signs that you are dehydrated

There are many signs that show you that you’re hydrated, but here are some of the easiest ones that you can watch for on a daily basis: (Today, 2021)

  • Dark urine:The darker your urine is, the more you are dehydrated!  You’ll want to always try to keep it a light yellow.
  • Difficulty in the bathroom:This could be difficulty urinating or having a bowel movement.
  • Feeling dizzy and out of sorts:In movement or even just sitting, dehydration can make you dizzy and just “out of it”
  • Extreme fatigue and muscle weakness:It could be sleepy fatigue, or it could be something like muscle weakness where something as simple as lifting a plate or a bowl seems impossible to do.
  • Feeling cold and rundown:If you feel chilled all the time and just run down, like you’re sick, this is another sign that you are fighting dehydration.

How much water is necessary?

The amount of water that you drink per day is really about your body metrics and your own personal profile.  Many people are told to drink “8 glasses a day”, but fail to mention the specifics on timing of those glasses and how big the glasses are!  Generally, you can aime for about 1 liter every 1.5 hours.

The most important thing with hydration is to keep drinking consistently.  Don’t chug the water on the hour mark.  Drink in small regular sips throughout the day and it’ll be the best way to keep you from getting dehydrated as well as running to the bathroom every 10 minutes (CDC, 2017).

Tips for hydrating properly

Other than the idea of drinking at regular intervals, you’ll also want to keep these tips in mind when hydrating daily:

  • Drink clean water:You’ll want to invest in a water filter for your home and make sure that the water that you're drinking is, in fact, clean. After all, no use doing all that work if the water isn’t healthy for you.
  • Drink plain water: Many people will add unnecessary sugar and more to their diet by drinking soda, juice and more.  These will hydrate you, but they won’t be as healthy for you as other options.  They also may counteract it, such as those drinks with caffeine!
  • Be responsible in the heat: If you are out in the heat and doing something active like playing a sport, you’ll need to really focus on hydration, since sweating is going to cause you a lot of damage when it comes to losing water!
